While Apple is usually good about removing harmful applications from the App Store, it looks like 17 apps have evaded the app review process. However, Apple has finally caught up with them.
This morning, we learned that Apple removed these 17 apps for containing malware. According to security company Wandera, the applications were completing fraud in the background. They used a “clicker trojan module”, which would continuously open advertisements in the background. Most likely, the companies behind the applications were doing this to make a profit.
Thankfully, the applications did not collect personal information, or harm the devices. The only problem was they were probably draining the battery – but not enough for you to notice.
The reason Apple didn’t find out about this originally is that the applications were receiving instructions from a remote server. Now that Apple knows about this kind of process, they are planning to add it to its review process.
All of the applications were from a company called AppAspect Technologies, which are listed below:
- RTO Vehicle Information
- EMI Calculator & Loan Planner
- File Manager – Documents
- Smart GPS Speedometer
- CrickOne – Live Cricket Scores
- Daily Fitness – Yoga Poses
